Mutism

The inability to speak — from various causes.

Mutism refers to the full or partial inability to speak. Causes include neurological damage (brain injury, stroke), apraxia of speech (inability to coordinate the muscles required for speech), trauma, and conditions such as autism spectrum disorder — where communication difficulties can range from unusual speech modulation and repetitive language to a complete absence of spoken language. Unlike selective mutism, many forms of mutism are persistent and not limited to specific social contexts. It is never deliberate rudeness or indifference.
